Splash Into Summer Safety
Jacksonville, FL., June 8, 2005 - SAFE KIDS Northeast Florida, Wolfson Children's Hospital, McDonald's and many other sponsors have initiated "Splash Into Summer Safety", a water safety campaign featuring the Swim For Life Foundation's "Safer 3". The summer program teaches parents, caregivers and kids how to prevent drownings and near-drownings at homes and in their communities. McDonald's will feature the "Splash Into Summer Safety" campaign on approximately 2,000,000 trayliners during June and July. Children in Northeast Florida, North Central Florida, and Southeast Georgia completing a series of swim lessons with participating
swim schools
will each receive a coupon for a free McDonald's ice cream cone.

Parents at participating swim schools in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia will receive a free
Wolfson Children's Hospital "water watcher tag", designed to help them supervise their children
while in or near the water this swimming season. Tags and a water safety checklist can also be
obtained on request by calling the hospital at 904.202.CARE (2273). SAFE KIDS' research has shown that the
most frequent cause of drowning in children is a brief lapse in adult supervision. Assigning an
adult water watcher at all times can help to ensure consistent supervision and is especially helpful
during group swimming sessions such as parties, when adults are likely to be distracted. Assigning a
water watcher at a community pool with a lifeguard is equally important, since the ratio of lifeguards
to swimmers is often 25:1 or higher.
Parents and pool owners should also be trained in pediatric CPR.
These classes are offered monthly at each of the Baptist Health hospitals in Northeast Florida.
The cost is $15.00 per person, and the training takes only 2 1/2 hours. To register,
call the Women's Resource Library at 904.202.2229.
