Free Interactive Safety Event on April 30 Teaches Important Lessons

Jacksonville, Florida - March 29, 2005 - Partnering with many other community organizations, SAFE KIDS Northeast Florida and Wolfson Children's Hospital have planned a free, fun-filled event to kick off National SAFE KIDS Week and Northeast Florida's active water recreation season. Themed "Follow the Leader...Safety Starts With You", the activities will help adults take the lead as safety role models for children during any type of water-related fun. Water safety experts from all over the community will share their knowledge via interactive displays, games and presentations, based on the "Safer Three: Safer Kids, Safer Water, Safer Response."

Adding to the fun, costumed characters including Ronald McDonald , Michigan J. Frog , Ready Red Cross, and many others will be there to teach kids and parents what they need to know. There will be giveaways and prize drawings for the whole family, and special appearances from community celebrities and Radio Disney to highlight the importance of water-safe behaviors.

WHEN:   Saturday, April 30, 2005 - 10 am - 2 pm

WHERE:   Adventure Landing
                  1944 Beach Blvd
                  Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250

The vast majority of American parents of children ages 14 and under appear knowledgeable regarding water safety issues. However, the most common reason children under five drown is a brief lapse in adult supervision, and one in five swimmers ages 8-12 has been swimming without a lifeguard or adult supervision at least a "few times". Drowning remains the leading killer of Florida's children under 5.

Parents can get involved to keep kids safe from drowning. Educating families about water safety is vital to preventing drowning and near drowning incidents. Through public awareness activities like National SAFE KIDS Week, SAFE KIDS Northeast Florida seeks to educate parents about water safety issues.

This event is sponsored by SAFE KIDS Northeast Florida, Wolfson Children's Hospital, Lead Agency and partners: Duval County Health Department, Florida Swimming Pool Association, YMCA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Children's Medical Services, City of Jacksonville Aquatics, American Red Cross, School of Swimming, City of Jacksonville Beach Lifeguards, Adventure Landing, McDonald's, and WJWB Ch 17.
